Which Exam to Take for Which Course to Study Abroad?

There are many exams that students can take to study abroad. The most popular and important entrance exams to study abroad are GRE, GMAT, SAT and IELTS. One of the benefits of doing well on these competitive international exams is that students can receive financial aid in the form of scholarships.
About the GRE
If you are thinking of studying abroad and want to pursue a course in management or engineering, you will need to take the GRE exam. The Graduate Record Examination is one of the largest and most famous examinations. A graduate level exam, the score is used by a variety of colleges for admissions to a large number of courses. The multiple choice computerized examination is accepted for both engineering as well as management admissions and even admission to social science courses. Scores are valid for 5 years and the exam is administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service).

The GRE is offered in a computer-based format at most test centers in the United States and many other countries. In areas where the computer-based format is not available, the paper-based format is offered.
What is a Good GRE Score?
Some programs may require a GRE score higher than the average, while others may be more forgiving. The best way to know what score you need is to look at the program’s website or speak with an admissions counselor.
Each graduate program sets its own GRE score requirements, so there is no one “good” GRE score. However, most programs require scores above the 50th percentile, so you’ll want to aim for a score above the average of 150.

About the GMAT
The GMAT is a computer-based test that assesses skills in quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and writing. It takes about four hours to complete.
The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) is one of the most famous aptitude examinations around the world. The score selected for admission to all courses related to management is widely accepted at all the best universities in the world (USA, UK, Germany, Canada, and Australia). Similar to India’s CAT, GMAT is a computerized online program that tests candidates on their quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, integrated reasoning and analytical writing.
You should take this exam if you want to study abroad or have an international degree. It is also mandatory in most business schools in USA and Canada as well as many European universities.
- The GMAT is offered year-round, and there are more than 1,500 test centers in over 160 countries.
- The GMAT measures skills in math, writing, and critical thinking that business school programs believe future business leaders need.
- The GMAT is scored on a scale of 200-800, and most business schools require a score of at least 600 to be considered for admission.
- The GMAT is a computer-based standardized test that assesses a test taker’s analytical writing, problem solving, and quantitative skills.
- The GMAT is used by business schools as part of the admissions process.
- The GMAT is used as an admission criterion by most of the top business schools in the United States, Europe, and Asia. The GMAT is also accepted by many other graduate schools, including law, medical, and engineering programs.
What is a Good GMAT Score?
There is no one “good” GMAT score. Rather, your GMAT score is a reflection of your individual strengths and weaknesses. A good GMAT score for one person may not be a good score for another person.
Your GMAT score is important because it is one of the factors that schools consider when assessing your application. A good GMAT score can help you demonstrate that you have the academic ability to succeed in a graduate program.
GMAT Score Ranges
The GMAT is scored across four sections:
- Analytical Writing Assessment, with scores ranging from 0 to 6
- Integrated Reasoning, with scores ranging from 1 to 8
- Verbal, with scores ranging from 6 to 51
- Quantitative, with scores ranging from 6 to 51
Your GMAT score report will also include percentile rankings. This is a measure of how your score compares to the scores of other test takers.

About the SAT Exam
The SAT is designed to measure a student’s readiness for college. The exam has three sections: Critical Reading, Mathematics, and Writing. The Critical Reading section includes reading comprehension and sentence completion questions. The Mathematics section includes questions on arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis. The Writing section includes an essay and multiple-choice questions on grammar and usage.
It is a common belief that SAT is required for all undergraduate admissions in the USA. This is not true. It is only required for a few universities.
SAT is a mandatory requirement for most undergraduate admissions in Canada.
In UK and Europe, SAT scores are not a mandatory requirement for undergraduate admissions. However, an SAT score of over 1200 puts you at an advantage when applying to top universities aboard.
SAT Subject tests are also taken by students who wish to apply to technical colleges or universities that require them. The SAT is offered seven times a year in the United States, and six times a year internationally. The exam is typically taken by high school juniors and seniors.
The SAT exam has 3 main sections:
- Critical Reading
- Mathematics
- Writing
What is a Good SAT Score?
The average SAT score was 1050. A score above 1050 would be above average and perfectly acceptable for many colleges. Getting a score of 1300 or higher would put you in the top 10% of test takers and help make your application competitive at more selective schools.

About the IELTS Exam
When you are applying to universities abroad, most of them will require an IELTS score. But which test should you take?
First of all, it depends on the university or college that you want to apply to. If you are applying to a top university in the UK or US, they might want to see a score of 6.5 or higher. However, if you are only applying for a bachelor’s degree and not a master’s degree then they may be happy with a lower band.
The other thing to consider is what type of course you would like to study abroad. For example, if you are going for an English course then it is likely that your exam will be based on speaking and listening skills rather than writing skills (although these can also be tested). So if this is something that interests you then consider taking the Academic Version which tests more speaking and listening skills than writing skills.
There are two types of IELTS test:
- The Academic IELTS test is for students who want to study at a university or college.
- The General Training IELTS test is for students who want to improve their English for work or travel.
What is a Good IELTS Score?
A student’s personal circumstances may affect the course they are able to take. For example, many universities have a minimum age requirement of 18 years old, and others may demand that students have an IELTS score of 7.0+ to allow them to study medicine.
IELTS scores almost forever range from 1 to 9 (“non-user” to “expert”), and there is a 0 score as well (“did not attempt”). You can also acquire a score finish in .5, for example, 6.5, 7.5., 8.5. Each entity IELTS Skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking) finds a band score in this range. You also acquire an overall band score for your whole test. This “compound” score is the average of your individual IELTS scores, and is destined to symbolize your overall English skill.
